The Smoker Is Lined Throughout
I was looking at the plans book you have for your smoker and was wondering how readily available the inner lining material is in the USA.
Seems like it is common in other countries, but I am not pulling up any sources here in the USA.
Answer:-
Hi Cliff,
You're right that the board I used in the making of this smoker isn't readily available in the USA but there is a good alternative with similar properties called
Durock® Next Gen manufactured by USG.
Note: - Since writing this answer, Thom, (yet another fellow constructor of my smoker design) has found another suitable board called Hardie Backer Board.
When I was planning my design I discovered a far more complicated (and therefore probably more expensive) construction that used Durock® to line the firebox. Looking at the technical spec of the product it is more or less a like for like in terms of fire and moisture resistance.
The fire board that I used in my contstruction was 6mm or ¼" thick whereas Durock® minimum thickness is 12mm or ½" so in my e-book the dimensions are calculated twice so that you have the correct measurements whether you are using board that is either ¼" or ½". The board is supplied in either 48" x 96" or 32" x 96", I used two sheets of 48" x 96" and had quite a bit spare so if both sheet size options are available you can probably get one of each and save yourself a few bucks in the process.
You can get Durock through
L & W Supply. There are other distributors but I've named this one simply because they are the largest distributor of gypsum wallboard in the USA operating approximately 160 distribution centers in 37 states.
